The RSVP Newsletter
Summer 2009
RSVP would like to thank everyone for their past support. Whether you've adopted a dog, fostered a special needs animal, volunteered your time, attended an event or offered a donation - it is appreciated more than words can say and enables RSVP to assist those dogs with no where else to turn. In an effort to keep all informed of the work that is made possible with your help, we will be publishing a newsletter periodically. So, here is an update on what's been happening! And thank you again for all you do!
Reunited ... these two lost souls spent more than a year in an over-crowded municipal shelter, both with little chance of finding a home. Both suffered major disabilities. Being a pitbull in a shelter is bad enough but being deaf (Beethoven right) or having a terrible case of dermadex mange and a thyroid condition (Belle left) can be a death sentence. Fortunately, these handicaps are never a deterrent to RSVP. These loving dogs were rescued and given a chance when RSVP took them into their care. Both found wonderful adoptive homes. RSVP followed up with home visits to ensure a successful and lasting placement. Six months later arrangements were made for both dogs to have playdates and they seem to remember each other. They share a passion for playing and truly enjoy the company of one another. Please consider making a donation to RSVP to assist in their efforts to save more deserving dogs who wait patiently in shelters for so long. Click here for more details about Belle & Beethoven. |
When RSVP volunteer and animal advocate Connie Farr heard about the cow from New York City that escaped from a slaughter house, she felt compelled to help. It wasn't long before Connie and her husband Rex made certain "Molly" would be safe forever ... on their 60 acre Long Island farm. Molly's escape and subsequent rescue reached the Associated Press and appeared in newspapers throughout the country and abroad. She quickly won the hearts of everyone who heard or read about her heroic escape. Molly is now safe at the “Farrm” where she will live out her life with the many other animals residing there. The Brookhaven municipal animal shelter is one of the largest shelters on Long Island. The facility typically houses approx. 80-100 dogs. That number skyrocketed to 147 this spring, reaching critical mass. RSVP Inc. offered assistance and enlisted the help of another local Long Island facility. Christine Russell, manager of the Southampton shelter took 9 (nine) dogs to help relieve some of the burden. RSVP continues to assist Brookhaven by rescuing some of their hardest to place dogs that have been waiting for over 1 year. Pictured is RSVP volunteer Kelly with Sassy. Merry was placed in 3 homes before finding her forever family. It seemed that Lady Luck had abandoned our adoptable little girl, but RSVP was not about to give up. They continued to search for Merri, knowing that someone was out there for her. Sure enough, the most wonderful parents a dog could ever find, fell in love with her. Merri's new parents wanted to express their appreciation to RSVP for bringing Merri into their lives. They generously offered to host a cocktail party to benefit other dogs, just like Merri who are still waiting.
