PeeWee

Feb, 2009

Special appeal by Joan Nicholetti, President of “Piece of Heaven”, a Long Island 501c3 animal rescue organization.

PeeWee was less than 10 lbs when I met him for the first time. He was hiding under a kitchen table and shaking like a leaf. Our small non-profit animal rescue group on Long Island was contacted by a family in Queens who did not have time for him. He had been neglected and unintentionally mishandled by small children in the family. His hair was long and matted to the point where you wouldn't know he was a poodle.

Right from the beginning, I knew PeeWee was very special. He was named Peewee because he was the smallest in our family of rescues, but it didn't take long to recognize that he was big at heart. On any given day Peewee would lay on his blanket, hiding several assorted rubber balls, bones, nylabones or his favorite king sized Kong.

Last week an unfortunate accident occurred while PeeWee was playing with his other rescued mates. Peewee suffered a herniated disc and was instantly paralyzed from the waist down. He was immediately taken to a local vet, but his injury proved to be too serious and a specialist was required. Peewee was rushed to an animal hospital in Nassau and the doctors there felt PeeWee could walk again if he received the necessary surgery. The procedure was estimated at $4,000. It was more than Piece of Heaven could afford but we knew we would have to find a way.

PeeWee is recovering now and is expected to walk again with the help of therapy. I know that these are difficult times but hopefully you can find it in your heart to help this innocent little fur ball that has had more than his share of suffering. Your donations, however small are tax deductible and will be appreciated beyond words. A check can be mailed to Piece of Heaven Animal Rescue at 40 Manor Lane, Jamesport, NY 11947 or call (631) 276-6096 for more information. Thank You.
