Jesse

March, 2009

"#27 is a male pitbull that is approx. 3 years old. He was picked up running at large on 2-26-09 and will be available for adoption on Friday 3-6-09.”

That is the description advertised on www.petfinder.com.

#27 is about as anonymous as you can get. He was picked up by the Riverhead Animal Shelter and unfortunately, it is against their policy to give stray dogs a name. The reason? Let's not go there, but it isn't because there are too many to keep track.

The facility has averaged about 4 dogs in recent years. That's the total number of dogs in-house on any given day. Hard to fathom. For some inexplicable reason the number has skyrocketed to about 14 in recent weeks. In any event, it doesn't seem to make a difference one way or another to #27, who is still waiting for someone to take him to that special place called home.

Linda Mosca, one of the volunteers is hoping that will change. She visits him faithfully and will take him for a walk, give him treats which he loves and provide some personalized TLC, basic training and playtime. She affectionately describes “Jesse,” whom she has given an identity to, as a “lap dog.” He is strong, muscular and will snuggle beside you while trying to climb into your lap, a comical sight given his size. Jesse was so thin when he was found in the winter but has put on some weight and is approximately 60 lbs.

So, if you happen to have an empty lap and would like to try Jesse on for size, call (631) 728-3524 or visit www.rsvpinc.org for more information. He is so much more than a number.
