Adopted Nov, 2009
Jayne

May, 2009
Update July, 2009
About a month ago, “Jayne” was featured – a black and white terrier mix with a compelling gaze that said, “Please, pick me.” She was one of 147 dogs that had been in an overcrowded municipal shelter for over a year when RSVP stepped in to to rescue her. Just prior to her release, she tested positive for heart worm. Fortunately, the cost of her treatment would be shared by the shelter and RSVP. Unfortunately, Jayne had to endure painful injections into her spine, and at one point she could not walk. It is truly heartbreaking that such innocent creatures have to suffer so. But the good news is that Jayne is doing great now. The volunteers rave about her disposition and how wonderful she is with other dogs.
Jayne will undergo another test soon and if all goes well, be fully recovered. But our “Sweet Jane” is still looking for a home. She is 2 years young, weighs approx. 35lbs and is very friendly and loving. It has been a long, arduous road and Jayne can almost see light at the end of the tunnel. Are you the one who will welcome her home? If Jayne could speak, she would say, “Please, say yes!”
For more information, visit www.rsvpinc.org or call (631) 728-3524. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to cover her medical and boarding costs, a check can be mailed to RSVP Inc., PO Box 335, Eastport, NY 11941.

147 dogs. That is the latest figure on the number of dogs at the Brookhaven Shelter. I spoke at a Town Hall Meeting to draw attention to this dire situation. The shelter typically houses 80-100 and that number is high. The recent increase may be attributed to the failing economy, loss of jobs and/or homes – with more pets being surrendered or abandoned. Whatever the reason, 147 dogs is the reality. The shelter director has stated that euthanasia is a last resort, but if nothing changes, there is the grave concern that dogs will die. RSVP, Inc. a non-profit animal rescue group serving Eastern Long Island has taken several dogs from this facility in the past and continues to do so as finances permit. They will be privately boarded and promoted through this column and other venues until a permanent home can be found. Selecting one dog at a time is akin to “Sophie's Choice” and a difficult decision. It is a small contribution but makes a world of difference to that special dog who has been given a second chance. The next dog to be rescued will be “Jayne.” Jayne is a small-mid sized, black and white terrier mix who has been at the shelter since January of 2008 – over 1 year ago. Her tenure there is testimony to her good disposition and temperament. She is approx. 2 years young, playful and friendly. Jayne's compelling gaze says it all, “Please, pick me.” For more information visit www.rsvpinc.org or call (631) 728-3524.
